Obviously not all online businesses and retailers are bad.  Online shopping has helped save many people loads of time, money and fuel in providing delivery of goods right to your post office or door step.

One must take care however when sharing what could be compromising information.

In most cases, you should never share your birth date, mother's maiden name or social security numbers. Before sharing your birth date, your mother's maiden name, or your social security number ask yourself why it is needed.   Some businesses, service providers and medical offices still may request your social security number on forms, but they oftentimes do not require this information to serve you.  Always check with them first to find out if they actually need this data and the reason why it is needed before providing.  The last four digits may suffice.

One technique is to pollute the data that's out there.  When it doesn't matter, put down the wrong birthday, mix up number on your social, give a different maiden name.

Locate your personal identification on search engines such as Google maps and other online phonebooks and ask them to remove your information.  This will require some doing, but you will be safer for the time spent. As much as possible control what info is out there on you.
