Fire pits, Fire Heaters and Chimenea's
Having been around both firepits and propane heaters, we really don't
like either alone. Combined, however, they are a really useful and
practical solution. The table heater for warmth, a small fire (minimum
smoke) for ambience. If you want to just hang outside with a drink, you
can fire up the propane and in a matter of moments create warmth without
smokey clothes. If you know you will have extended time outside,
throw a log or two in the Chimnea or firepit for greater ambience.
There's nothing better or more relaxing than staring at the crackling
flames in a fireplace. If the night is warm enough (and not much wind),
maybe you'll only need the firepit. If it's really cold, crank them both
up.
Chiminea's may just not be reliable enough in the clay version. In
order to get enough heat (like the maximum 40,000 BTUs from the propane
heater - which is serious heat) you have to really dump in the logs.
That in turn trashes the chiminea if it hasn't been seasoned (or maybe
seasoning doesn't ever fully happen).
Target has a nice selection of outdoor fireplaces.
Home Depot has some nice propane heaters for as low as $150 in aluminum.
Stainless would last a long time in a California environment. A search
for patio heaters at Home Depot will give you a vast selection of
propane and gas patio firepits, fireplaces, tall heaters, chimenea's,
and shorter heaters.
